Wanindu plays for the national cricket team in all three formats of the game. He made his first ODI half-century against the West Indies on March 14, 2021. Wanindu reached a career-high second place in the ICC T20I rankings in July 2021 after numerous economical bowling stints in T20I series against England and India. Wanindu grabbed four wickets in the third T20I match of the series against India in July 2020, he went on to become the player of the match as well as the player of the series. Wanindu became the first bowler for Sri Lanka to take a hat-trick in a T20 World Cup match against South Africa on October 30th 2021. Wanindu was selected to the ICC Men’s ODI Team of the Year and the ICC Men’s T20I Team of the Year at the annual ICC Awards in January 2022. The International Cricket Council awards the ICC Men’s ODI Team of the Year title every year. It honors the best cricket players from across the world in the ODI format of the game. The team does not compete; instead, it serves as an honorary team. In the 2022 IPL Auction, Wanindu was picked up by the Royal Challengers Bangalore.
